Stretching splint for Achilles Tendonitis

A stretching splint, worn for a few hours at night, is an effective tool to manage Achilles tendonitis by gently stretching the tendon and promoting healing. This method helps to relieve pain, improve flexibility, and prevent the tendon from tightening during sleep.

A stretching splint, often referred to as a night splint, is designed to keep your foot in a dorsiflexed position, meaning the foot is flexed upward to stretch the Achilles tendon. By maintaining this position for an extended period, the splint helps reduce stiffness and promotes healing while you rest.

For Achilles tendonitis, it’s recommended to wear the splint for about 3 hours at night. This allows the tendon to stay in a gently stretched position, which helps alleviate the pain that often occurs after periods of inactivity, such as sleeping or sitting for long periods. Using the splint regularly can also improve flexibility over time and reduce the risk of future tendon tightness.

When using a stretching splint:

1. Ensure Proper Fit: The splint should be comfortably snug but not too tight, allowing for gentle stretching without cutting off circulation.

2. Wear for 3 Hours: Apply the splint for around 3 hours at night, either while you sleep or during a period of rest.

3. Consistency is Key: Use the splint consistently to see the best results. Regular use helps prevent the Achilles tendon from shortening during periods of rest, reducing morning stiffness and pain.

While a stretching splint can be a highly effective part of Achilles tendonitis management, it’s important to combine it with other treatments like icing, gentle stretching exercises, and anti-inflammatory medications as prescribed by your healthcare provider. If your symptoms persist or worsen, consult with a healthcare professional for further advice.
