Fungal Skin Infection

Fungal Skin Infection

Athlete's foot is a fungal skin infection. Warm, damp shoes and shared wet areas help fungus grow.

Why it happens
You do not have to be an athlete to get it. Sweaty feet and damp areas such as locker rooms and pool decks allow fungus to thrive.

What you may notice
Itching, scaling or peeling on the soles or between toes. Cracks or blisters may develop.

Recognizing different appearances
Athlete’s foot may cause white, itchy skin between toes or flaky areas on the soles and sides. Some people develop blisters or cracks that bleed. Redness can be harder to see on darker skin, so notice soreness, warmth and swelling as well.

Treatment and what to expect
An antifungal cream, spray or powder may be recommended. Ask how much to use and for how long. Fungus can spread to the nails; report nail changes as well as skin symptoms. Cracks can allow bacteria into the skin and cause an additional infection. Keeping feet dry helps limit fungal growth. Ask the office to check a persistent rash rather than repeatedly trying different products yourself.

When to call
Call if the rash is not improving or if cracks, redness, swelling or drainage develop. People with diabetes should report new skin problems promptly.

Your next steps
● Wash daily and dry carefully, especially between toes.● Change damp socks and wear footwear in shared showers.
● Use the recommended antifungal product for the full instructed course.

Reducing spread at home
Dry feet by patting, including between toes. Use a separate towel for your feet and wash it regularly. Avoid sharing towels, socks and shoes.

Wear clean socks daily and alternate shoes so they can dry. Avoid scratching, which can spread the infection elsewhere.

What to expect from treatment
Pharmacy antifungal products often take a few weeks to work. Products differ in age limits and directions; ask a pharmacist or clinician which is suitable. If treatment fails, an examination may be needed and prescription tablets may be considered. Seek prompt advice for a hot, painful, red foot or leg, or if you have a weakened immune system.
